True Love
She wandered the streets feeling forlorn. She’d always dreamed that someone would whisk her away from this life, offer her something better, there had to be something better. Being homeless with no family wasn’t fun, but still better than the life she escaped from; a world of abuse.
Gazing in shop windows, she’d seen glimpses of movies where a prince charming would sweep a girl off her feet and carry her off into the sunset. She always hoped that would happen to her.
But she was dirty, raggedy, who was going to look at her. She did try, she’d gaze into the faces of the men that walked past, but they didn’t see her. They were too much in a rush to dash off somewhere, either hop on a bus or get in a car, no one had time for her, not even to offer her a helping hand.
Years passed, and she’d just about given up. She didn’t worry about trying to find food to eat, she just wanted to die and would lay on the roadside, not caring anymore. She’d be locked up for vagrancy and still she didn’t care, what was the point of caring, this world was just too cruel.
Then one day a man approached her. “Hello gorgeous” he said. She was surprised, he couldn’t be talking to her, surely. “How about I get you out of here” He organized to get her release from this prison and offered her a place to stay. She went home with him, initially uncertain. Her thoughts flashed back to her last home where she was constantly abused. But she soon learned that this man was gentle. He made her breakfast in bed and they went for walks along the beach. He would read stories to her in the evening before tucking her in his bed for the night.
Over time, she learned to trust him when she realised he would never hurt her. It was clear he loved her and she soon fell deeply in love with him. Soon she would only have eyes for him.

This love might not be the romance you see between a man and a woman, but it IS a true love, a truer love than what two humans can share. A true love between an individual and their four legged companion. A rescued dog will offer their love and life to the person who offers them a hand… and a heart.
